COMPETITIONS

Abe is collaborating with Resident Advisor for a remix comp for his and Blake Baxter's classic "What Happened?". He's also collaborated with DJ mag (UK) and Groove (Germany) to offer two people each a day each in a studio in London and Berlin.

The DJ mag / UK comp has closed but Groove is still open, and the RA remix comp started only late Aug. Check out the competition page to enter (that's also where you join to get freebies like dj mixes, free tracks and remix kits...)

Or you can join the list right here.

WHAT HAPPENED? THE REMIX COMPETITION

With Abe Duque's album Don't Be So Mean now out, ResidentAdvisor and Process are teaming to offer you the chance to remix Abe and Blake Baxter's classic What Happened?

What dancefloor were you on when you first heard Abe Duque and Blake Baxter's "What happened?"

At that time, Abe Duque had spent a few years in the wilderness. He'd fallen from a regular on the European techno touring circuit to eking out a living as a carpenter, with barely enough money to release his own music - the legendary early Abe Duque Records 12"s, one-sided, with messages from Abe hand-scratched into the vinyl lacquer on each release.

And with good music drowning in a rising tide of bad mainstream minimal, Abe and Blake Baxter were both at their wits end. Blake recorded a killer vocal over a dark, springy Abe groove, asking where the love had gone. "The limelight, NYC. What Happened? Can someone tell me? Studio 54. We all know what happened..."

Also on that release were Acid and Disco Nights, another two stone-cold classics.

The 12" took Abe and Blake right back to the centre of techno - twenty-five thousand sold on vinyl, and dancefloors round the world asking "Hip House - What the F**k happened? Drum and bass - What happened?"

Now, as the world drowns under a new flood of ill-advised conga-afro-minimal, Process Recordings and ResidentAdvisor have set up a remix competition for Abe Duque and Blake Baxter's legendary track, What Happened? Conditions shown below.

To enter, join the Abe Duque list below. The competition closes end Sep, Abe Duque will decide the winner, and it will be released as part of the Abe Duque Classics package including remixes by Marc Romboy and Max Cooper, as well as a spanking remix of Disco Nights by Jay Haze. This will be the fourth release around Abe's latest album DON'T BE SO MEAN...

CONDITIONS FOR STUDIO COMP

It is the winner's responsbility to get themselves to Berlin on the day TBD with Process Recordings. There will be one winner, and they are entitled to one day only in Berlin. The day will last no longer than eight hours and start no earlier than 11AM - did you really want a 9AM start? Abe Duque is happy to give advice and practical help with existing tracks, help to write new tracks or with new remixes, or simply answer questions. If the winner wants to work on existing tracks, it is their responsbility to bring all samples and files to the session (though Process Recordings will help where it can). Process Recordings is not responsible for organising visas into Germany, and those who cannot travel into either country to recieve their prize will be disqualified from winning. The photos in this feature are of Abe's home studio in NYC; a different studio will be used in Berlin.
